What is Degradable Frac Fiber?

Degradable frac fiber is a kind of short fiber made from biodegradable polymers, designed for use in hydraulic fracturing fluids. It forms a 3D fiber network in thefracturing fluid, which helps to:

It offers a high-performance and more sustainable alternative to traditional
non-degradable fibers.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

We offer different grades for different downhole temperature ranges. Typical options include a low-temperature grade around 80°C and a high-temperature grade around 150°C.

The appropriate grade should be selected according to the actual bottom-hole temperature, required working time, and fracturing-fluid system.

The degradation time depends on the fiber grade, temperature, fluid chemistry, pH, salinity, and other downhole conditions.

For typical applications, grades can be selected to achieve degradation within approximately 24–72 hours under the specified temperature conditions. We recommend confirming performance through testing under conditions representative of the intended well.

The fiber is designed to progressively lose its structure and degrade after completing its temporary function. Actual degradation behavior depends strongly on temperature and fluid conditions.

For projects requiring a specific degradation percentage or residue requirement, we can recommend a suitable grade and evaluate the required specifications.

Our typical fiber length range is 3–9 mm, with 6 mm being a commonly requested specification.

Other lengths can be discussed depending on the fracturing-fluid system and application requirements.

Typical fiber size is approximately 0.15–6 denier. The appropriate specification depends on the required dispersion, suspension, plugging, and proppant-transport performance.

We have fiber grades suitable for slickwater fracturing systems. Compatibility should still be evaluated with the actual formulation because friction reducers, surfactants, salts, crosslinkers, and other additives can affect fiber dispersion and degradation behavior.

Yes. Degradable frac fibers can also be used in certain crosslinked and hybrid fracturing-fluid systems.

For a specific formulation, we recommend compatibility testing before field application.

The fibers are designed for good dispersion when introduced under appropriate mixing conditions. Fiber concentration, addition rate, fluid viscosity, and agitation can all influence dispersion.

For initial laboratory testing, gradual addition under sufficient agitation is recommended to minimize fiber agglomeration.

There is no single dosage suitable for every fracturing treatment. The optimum concentration depends on whether the fiber is being used primarily for proppant transport, fluid-loss control, temporary plugging, or fracture diversion, as well as the fluid and proppant system.

We recommend determining the dosage through laboratory testing before field use.

Yes. Different polymer compositions and fiber specifications can be used to adjust degradation behavior.

Please provide your bottom-hole temperature, target degradation time, fracturing-fluid type, and intended application, and we can recommend an appropriate grade.

For an accurate recommendation, please provide:

  • Bottom-hole temperature
  • Desired degradation time
  • Intended application: proppant transport, temporary plugging, diversion, or fluid-loss control
  • Fracturing-fluid type
  • Preferred fiber length, if specified
  • Required sample or commercial quantity

If available, information about salinity, pH, proppant type, and laboratory test conditions is also helpful.

Yes. Evaluation samples are available for laboratory testing before bulk purchase. We recommend testing the fiber under conditions representative of the intended fracturing-fluid formulation and downhole environment.
