Degradable Diverter Particles

Temporary Plugging. Better Fracture Diversion. A Cleaner Tomorrow.

Polylactide’s degradable diverter particles are engineered for temporaryplugging and fracture diversion in hydraulic fracturing, providing reliableperformance and complete degradability after the treatment.

OVERVIEW

A Sustainable Solutionfor Fracture Diversion

Our degradable diverter particles are made from bio-based
polymers such as PLA, PGA, or PLGA. They are designed to
temporarily block high-permeability zones, divert fracturing
fluid to new areas, and then gradually degrade after the
treatment, leaving no long-term residue in the formation.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

Degradable diverter particles are temporary plugging materials used during hydraulic fracturing and stimulation treatments. They temporarily bridge and seal existing fractures or high-permeability flow paths, helping redirect treatment fluids toward less-stimulated zones. After the treatment, the particles gradually degrade under downhole conditions, reducing the need for mechanical removal.

The particles are pumped into the formation with the treatment fluid and accumulate at fractures or other flow paths. Properly selected particles bridge and pack together to create a temporary pressure barrier. The resulting pressure increase redirects fluid into alternative fractures or perforation clusters, helping improve fracture coverage and complexity.

Our degradable diverter particles can be manufactured from biodegradable polyester-based materials such as PLA, PGA, PLGA, and customized polymer systems. Material selection can be adjusted according to the required degradation temperature, degradation time, mechanical properties, and downhole environment.

Particle size can be customized according to the application and target fracture geometry. Typical options include:

  • 100–300 μm
  • 300–500 μm
  • 500–1000 μm
  • 1000–2000 μm

Other particle-size ranges and blended particle-size distributions can also be developed upon request. Particle size is an important design parameter because relatively small changes in particle size and concentration can significantly affect bridging and plugging performance.

Yes. The polymer composition, molecular weight, particle size, and formulation can be adjusted to develop different degradation profiles for specific downhole conditions.

When requesting a customized grade, we recommend providing the bottomhole temperature, desired degradation time, fluid environment, and target particle size. Formation temperature and particle size can both significantly influence degradation behavior.

The degradation time depends on the polymer formulation, particle size, temperature, fluid chemistry, and other downhole conditions. Rather than using one universal degradation time, we can recommend or customize a grade based on your target operating conditions.

Need a specific degradation window? Send us your bottomhole temperature and desired degradation time for a recommended grade.

Yes. Particles and degradable fibers can be used together to create a multimodal temporary plugging system. Fibers can assist in forming the initial bridging network, while particles of different sizes fill the remaining gaps and help build a denser temporary plug. Studies have shown that combinations of fibers and multiple particle sizes can improve plugging performance under appropriate fracture conditions.

They can be used in applications such as temporary fracture plugging, fracture diversion, refracturing, multi-stage hydraulic fracturing, and stimulation of unconventional reservoirs. Their primary purpose is to temporarily isolate existing flow paths and redirect treatment fluids toward untreated or under-stimulated zones.

Selection should be based on several operating parameters, especially:

Bottomhole temperature • fracture width • required degradation time • treatment fluid • target plugging location • required particle-size distribution

Particle size relative to fracture width is particularly important for effective bridging and plugging.

Send us your application parameters and our technical team can recommend a suitable material and particle-size range.

Yes. We support customized polymer composition, particle size, particle-size distribution, degradation temperature, and degradation time. For custom development, please provide your operating temperature, target degradation period, fluid system, fracture conditions, and any other technical requirements.
